Monetary History

The currency history of the various countries contains three parts.



(1) Monetary Overview

Overview of the developments in the country's currency since around the 19th century and the timeline of issuing institutes that have been responsible for the currencies.


(2) Currency Units

For each currency unit a detailed timeline of events in the domain of:
- Laws and regulations governing money issuance
- Issuance and usage of means of payment (coins and banknotes)
- Valuation regimes and exchange rate arrangements of a currency unit (parity against metal or other currencies)
- Development of the exchange rates against the US Dollar since 1946.


(3) Identification

The names of the country, the currencies and means of payment, the issue institutes, and government instances are given in the local languages.
