Historical Sketch
French colonization of the area at the mouth of the Ogowe River began in 1839. All settlements on the Atlantic coast between Senegal and the Belgian Congo were originally called the French African West, comprising the territories of Gabon, Gorée and Middle Congo. In 1886, a colonial rule was formally established, and the entire territory was called French Congo, which in 1903, was partitioned again into the colonies of Gabon and Middle Congo. In 1946, Middle Congo was transformed into an overseas territory and in preparation for the French Union it got constituted as autonomous Republic of Congo (-Brazzaville) in 1958. Two years later, after the failure of the French Union, it attained independence. Between 1969 and 1992, Congo was constituted as People's Republic.
