Since 1990, South Africa has nine official languages beside English and Afrikaans, all spelled with Latin writing and Western numerals. They are grouped according to mutual intelligibility as:
- "Nguni Group": [NBL] Ndebele, [SSW] Swati, [XHO] Xhosa, [ZUL] Zulu
- "Sotho Group": [NSO] Pedi, [SOT] Sotho, [TSW] Tswana
- [TSO] Tsonga
- [VEN] Venda.
All government documents have to be available in (at least) one language per group.
