Timeline

  • Far Eastern Republic: Created in April 1920 after the establishment of the Soviet regime in Siberia. In November 1922 it was dissolved and absorbed into the Russian Federation.
  • 05.06.1920
  • Ordinance [No. 252] of the Provisional Government of the Far East on the withdrawal of the circulating paper money and exchange into newly issued treasury notes at a rate of 1 : 200; effective immediately
    - 07.06.1920: Government resolution [No. 335] on the rating against gold at 1 gold Ruble = 10 Far Eastern Rubles; effective immediately
    - The exchange started on 01.07.1920 and lasted for 10 days in Irkutsk and 20 days outside.

  • Law [No. 252] on the introduction of the gold Ruble as unit of account; effective immediately
    - The rate of the paper money against gold was to be determined on a daily basis.
  • 16.05.1921
  • Law on the acceptance of the gold Ruble for transactions; effective immediately
    - The circulating curreny mainly consisted of silver coins, the paper money of the Far Eastern Ruble continued to be rated against gold but quickly disappeared.
  • 22.11.1922
  • Start of issuance of Russian state bank notes denominated in Chervonez with fixed rate against gold throughout the Russian Federation (including the former Far Eastern Republic).
  • 01.03.1925
  • End of exchange period for the imperial silver coins in Siberia (13.04.1925 for the remote regions) after the Soviet monetary reform of March 1924.


  • Turkestan: The Soviet regime was established in mid-1918, creating the Turkestan Autonomous Republic of the Russian Federation in October 1918, renamed into Turkestan (Autonomous) Soviet Republic in September 1920. In October 1924 it was dissolved and partitioned into Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
  • 1918-1919
  • Local paper money issuance:
    - 03.09.1918 / 17.09.1918: Decrees [No. 944, 945] of the Russian Council of People's Commissars on the issuance of paper money by the Turkestan branch of the State Bank; effective immediately
    - 16.04.1919: Decree of the Russian Council of People's Commissars on the further issuance of local paper money by the Turkestan branch of the State Bank; effective immediately
    - November 1919: Resolution of the People's Commissariat of Finance of the Turkestan Republic on exchanging the 1918-1919 paper money against Russian paper money ("model 1919") at a rate of 1 Russian Ruble = 10 Turkestan Rubles.


  • North Caucasus Emirate: The emirate emerged in September 1919 in the territories of Dagestan and Chechnya under the lead of Uzun Hajji. Already in March 1920, it was defeated by the Red Army and absorbed into Russia as Dagestan and Mountain Autonomous Republics.

  • Local money issuance:
    - September 1919: Paper money issuance using overprinted 100 Rubles notes of the Terek Republic (March 1918 – February 1919)
    - October-November 1919: Paper money issuance using overprinted 500, 100 Rubles notes of the North Caucasian Soviet Republic (July - December 1918)
    - December 1919: Paper money issuance using overprinted notes of the Terek Republic (100, 50, 25, 10 Rubles) and the North Caucasian Soviet Republic (100, 50 Rubles)
    - Early 1920: Issuance of regular state notes of 250, 100, 50, 25, 5 Rubles. The higher values carried an additional denomination in Tuman = 10 Rubles.
    - Early 1920: Issuance of a copper coin of 10 Tuman.
