Historical Sketch
In the aftermath of the Yugoslav civil war, Kosovo unilaterally seceded from Serbia during the Yugoslav civil war. In early 1999, it was placed under international administration. In 2008, a unilateral declaration of independence was made. Serbia and a larger number of states have not yet recognized the move.
Monetary History Overview
During United Nations protectorate established in 1999, the administration passed an ordinance to adopt the
European Euro
replacing the Yugoslav currency, which at that time was only current in Serbia. Since there were no European banknotes and coins issued yet, German money was introduced beginning of 2000. The Yugoslav Dinar was not demonetized and had to be used up individually. The adoption of the Euro is unilateral as Kosovo is not a member of the European Monetary Union and no monetary agreement is in place. After independence, the Central Bank of the Republic of Kosovo has taken over from the institutions founded under the UN protectorate.
Kosovo joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on
29.06.2009.
