An orthography reform in 1953 replaced the letter "â" by the phonetically identical "î" everywhere, which also changed the country name into "Romînia". In 1965, the traditional spelling "România" was restored for the country name and its derivations, while the 1953 reform remained in force everywhere else (cf. "Compendium of the World's Languages").
