• Issuance of the first Liberian paper money:
  - 12.04.1989: Presidential decree (by Samuel K. Doe) on the issuance of a banknote of 5 Dollars (later called "J.J." after the effigy of former president Joseph J. Roberts); issued on 17.07.1989
  - 06.04.1991: Resolution of the "Interim Government of National Unity of Liberia" on the issuance of a banknote of 5 Dollars (later called "Liberty" after the depiction of the Liberian coat of arms); the banknotes were re-issued during the civil war and depreciated to about half face value.
