    - Around the mid-1850s, the Cambodian king acquired a minting machine from Siam and issued silver coins (or coin-like ingots) in weights of 1, ¼, ⅛ Siamese tical (of ca. 15.2 grams), dated 1847-1848 (CS:1208-1209), and smaller billon and copper coins.

    - ca. 1902: Re-issue of the 1, ½, ¼ Franc (silver) coins without denominations and entitled "souvernir"; were not intended for circulation.

    - 20.03.1980: Start of issuance of the new banknotes and coins
    - The currency was initially defined in kind as 1 Cambodial Riel = 1 kilogram of rice (literally, the amount of rice measured by four cans of condensed milk)
    - Throughout the 1980s, the Cambodian economy had fallen back to barter with US Dollars as a circulating medium. In the border regions the currencies of the neighbor countries, Thai Baht and Vietnamese Dong were used in payments
    - There is no known relation to the 1st Cambodian Riel since the monetary structure had been distroyed completely. Based on the official exchange rate, it may be appoximated as 1 Cambodian Riel (1980) = ~250 Cambodian Riels (1955).
