Historical Sketch
In 1965, Great Britain separated the Chagos archipelago from Mauritius and three islands from the Seychelles and combined them into the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT). The local population was expelled and deported to neighbouring islands.
Monetary History Overview
The BIOT hosts British and United States military installations and has no permanent inhabitants. In 2009, the production of collector coins without legal tender status has started.
