Indonesian Originally, Indonesian was written in the Arabic Jawi script while Javanese had a distinct writing system, called Huruf Jawa (Hanacaraka). The Dutch colonial administration introduced the Latin script for both languages with a Dutch-style orthography. In 1972, the Indonesian orthography got adjusted (e.g. "Rupiah" instead of "Roepiah").
