Historical Sketch

French colonization of the area at the mouth of the Ogowe River began in 1839. All settlements on the Atlantic coast between Senegal and the Belgian Congo were originally called the French African West, comprising the territories of Gabon, Gorée and Middle Congo. In 1886, a colonial rule was formally established, and the entire territory was called French Congo, which in 1903, was partitioned again into the colonies of Gabon and Middle Congo. In 1946, Gabon was transformed into an overseas territory and in preparation for the French Union it got constituted as autonomous republic. Two years later, after the failure of the French Union, Gabon attained independence.

Monetary History Overview

Since independence in 1960, is a member of the Central African Monetary Union and uses the Central African CFA Franc instead of a national currency.

Gabon joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on 10.09.1963.
