Historical Sketch
In 1895, France established a protectorate on the area of the conquered Mooré (Mossi) kingdom, which was integrated into the colony of Upper Senegal-Niger in 1904. In 1919, a separate colony of Upper Volta was created but dissolved again in early 1933, when the territory was split up and integrated into the colonies of Senegal, Niger and Côte d'Ivoire. In 1947 finally, Upper Volta was restored as a separate overseas territory. In 1960 Upper Volta attained independence. After the 1984 revolution the country name was changed into Burkina Faso.
