Numbers 1 and 2 adopt the gender of the noun.
Adaptation of the Counted Noun to the Number
Number 1 is followed by the noun in nominative singular, 2-4 are followed by the noun in a special "234-form" (derived from an old dual), 5 and higher are followed by the noun in genitive plural.
